Your Food had a Life
I saw the butcher reach out
and grab a chicken by it neck
it fluttered and croaked without a hope
and so it met its end
I saw a young goat tied outside
watching the stout bloodied stump
Where he will end up soon
hacked and minced not in much time
When I bought the eggs by the dozen
and saw it getting cracked and beaten
Fried and tossed into a yellow omlette
I wondered should I have left
Then I saw those fruits and vegetables
Stacked neatly on my kitchen table
Plucked harshly from its home the earth
denied its right to grow, nurture and multiply.
I realised how futile it is
to survive without devouring a life
for life can only sustain and extend itself
through another life and
we are all alive because
we snatched someone else's
